Contractor Permit - Contruction Permit The City Engineer's Office is responsible for the design layout, formulation of bids, coordination with private contractors, and inspection of city government capital improvements during construction. Project priority recommendations also come from this office. In addition, Code Enforcement, Building Inspection, and Signal Departments are under the direction of the City Engineer. Pictured is the reconstruction of S. Race St. in Fourth Ward. The engineer's office coordinated with an outside engineering firm to meet the special challenges of providing adequate drainage to the lowest point of the street. This street had been without curbs, and was narrower that the city block leading into it. Redesign of this street included the moving of power poles and widening of the street to meet future traffic demands.
